I am VERY sad that I will miss ALL of these events as I am leaving town for a week on March 6th to help take care of mom (nothing serious, everyone is fine). But I will see you at another event soon, I hope! And I can't wait to read Dead Country!
Your note about meeting people midway on life's journey reminded me of those moments in the Very Long RPGs when you meet a companion when you're like level 50 (or level 1/2 of MAX), and the companion is pretty leveled up. I used to be kind of frustrated by those -- I already have my party, thankyouverymuch -- but have been learning to appreciate the experience of adding someone fully fleshed out and Powerful in the literal middle of things.
I'm sorry we'll miss you! Please give our love to your mom. And, hey, if you're looking for something to do the evening of the 7th, you can always drop by the virtual event last minute!
Those mid-game character intros can be great though--thinking especially of Shadow *finally* joining the party in FFVI. The hard one for me (mostly a ludonarrative dissonance thing) was loving a character's story and dialog but not having space for them in play. It used to be particularly rough with Bioware games: 3 person party, but I have 8 or 9 folks chilling back at the Normandy who all talk as if we're battle-hardened best buds...
Oh boy do I hear that! Lo and I are currently playing through Baldur's Gate 2 and I forgot just the extent to which every five minutes, as you're wandering down the street, your old buddy so and so runs up to you and says "Hey! We must travel together again! By the way here is an emotionally devastating side quest that you must embark on immediately after letting me into your party or I will hate you forever!" Whew.
Yay Dead Country!

Oof, I hate those! So many save scums before I realized I had to hop onto those side quests or earn an enemy for life.
